Gelassenheit, das hat in Böhmes Terminologie nichts mit der modernen Verwendung des Begriffs in der psychologischen Ratgeberliteratur gemein; Gelassenheit, das meint für ihn statt dessen das völlige Aufgehen des eigenen Willens in den göttlichen. Mit seiner Schrift ›Von der wahren Gelassenheit‹ fügt sich Böhme ein in die Tradition mystischer Reflexionen zu diesem Begriff, die von Meister Eckhart, Johannes Tauler und Heinrich Seuse über die ›Theologia Deutsch‹ und Valentin Weigel reicht. Interessant ist die Schrift aber auch speziell aus editionsphilologischer Perspektive. Es handelt sich bei ihr um die einzige, die sich sowohl in Böhmes Handschrift als auch in einem noch zu seinen Lebzeiten in Görlitz veranstalteten (und also vom Autor eventuell autorisierten) Druck, nämlich dem 1624 erschienenen Sammelband ›Der Weg zu Christo‹, erhalten hat.

The new edition of Jacob Böhme’s writings and letters begins with his short but, from a philosophical point of view, extremely demanding ›Gründlichen Bericht vom irdischen und himmlischen Mysterio‹ (Basic Account of the Earthly and Heavenly Mystery), also known as ›Mysterium Pansophicum‹, which was only preserved in copies. In it, Böhme developed the main feature of his cosmology of God’s self-generation up to the creation of the world and man in nine texts, each of which is based on the previous one. Of pivotal significance is the concept of the un-ground, to which Böhme gave a new interpretation and which like no other is directly linked to his name and his doctrine. The first sentence, »Der Ungrund ist ein ewig Nichts« (The un-ground is an eternal nothingness), is the key element of this work.

In seinem mittelniederländischen ›Spieghel der volcomenheit‹ (1455–1460) hat der Franziskaner-Observant Hendrik Herp die zentralen Gedanken wichtiger Autoritäten der lateinischen und volkssprachlichen mystischen Theologie für Laien systematisiert. Das Werk wurde in Europa bald ein regelrechter Bestseller. Dennoch würde heute kaum jemand Herp zu den zentralen Figuren der christlichen Mystik zählen. Diesen philosophiehistorischen Missstand möchte Abrams Studie beheben. Sie untersucht, welche philosophischen Inhalte Herp vermittelt und mittels welcher Kanäle der ›Spieghel‹ seine erfolgreiche Verbreitung erfuhr. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf Herps Auffassung der Seele und ihrem anagogischen Weg zurück in ihren Ursprung, die göttliche triadische Einheit.

Marie Lataste (1822–1847) war eine französische Mystikerin und begnadete Ordensschwester der »Société du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus«. Neben vielen Gnadenerweisen und außerordentlichen Mitteilungen empfing sie über zwei Jahre hinweg göttliche Unterweisungen in den wichtigsten Wahrheiten des Christentums, welche sie auf Wunsch ihres Seelenführers niederschrieb. Sie starb mit nur 25 Jahren im Konvent des Sacré-Cœur zu Rennes im Rufe der Heiligkeit.
Dieses Buch, niedergeschrieben von dem einfachen Landmädchen Marie Lataste, welches weder gelehrten Unterricht noch ebensolche Bücher genossen hatte, ist in seiner ganzen Art wahrhaft einzigartig. Man findet in ihm das Wichtigste aus der ganzen Theologie so gründlich und einfach, so kernig, würdevoll und anziehend zugleich, wie es für jeden Katechismus nur wünschenswert wäre. Zugleich sind die Aussagen aber auch in vollkommener Übereinstimmung mit der Heiligen Schrift, mit den Lehren der Konzilen, Väter und großen Kirchenlehrer. Dabei spricht Marie Lataste über die erhabensten Geheimnisse des Glaubens mit einer Tiefe der Anschauung und mit einer Kenntnis, die man sonst nur bei den größten Gelehrten der Kirche wiederfindet. So ist in diesem Werk ein reichhaltiger, dogmatischer, moralischer und aszetischer Schatz niedergelegt. In allen Belehrungen weht ein Geist voll göttlicher Würde, Erhabenheit und Kraft, voller Klarheit und Einfachheit.

The book of Jezirah, a Hebrew treatise from late antiquity, gives an account of the divine creation of the world and of the ensuing course of events. It is one of the most important works of Jewish mysticism and philosophy. The treatise was first published in 1552 in a commentated translation by the great philosopher Guillaume Postel. Its publication in a Latin Christian context shows that its reverberations exceeded Jewish circles. The work is one of the basic texts of early modern concepts of creation and science. The editor’s introduction includes annotations to Postel’s comments throughout.

Weigel‹s Christological works met with interest outside of the German-speaking countries as well very early on. A Dutch translation of the homiletic pamphlet ›Von Betrachtung des Lebens Christi‹ (A Reflection on the Life of Christ), written in 1574, was published in 1647 and 1686. An English translation of the comprehensive work ›Vom Leben Christi‹ (On the Life of Christ), written in 1578, which advocated religious freedom and rejected the disputes between the confessions, in part with a purpose of polemic, was published in 1648. There are only extant fragments of the ›De vita Christi‹, which is in the appendix, a compilation in German based on various Weigel texts.

Rudolf (around 1270-1326) was a contemporary of Meister Eckhart and worked in Strasbourg, as did Meister Eckhart. Rudolf was a lecturer and a teacher in the Studium Generale (extracurricular studies). His main work was read not only by the clergy but was also circulated at universites as well as among the nobility and the haute bourgeoisie, which was an indication of the intellectual standing already attributed to him by his contemporaries. ‹Die sieben Wege zu Gott‹ (The Seven Ways to God) also gives texts and ideas originating from a number of spiritual and theological authors from the 14th to the 17th century. The ‹Die siben strassen zu got‹ documents the fact that the history of mysticism is also a history of education which was passed on to our second millennium with Rudolf von Biberach as its intermediary.

Pring-Mill’s study depicts the prevalent, but often neglected worldview of the Middle Ages, according to which the macrocosm is a chain of created being ascending from the four elements of the material world to the numerologically structured celestial spheres up to the creator himself. Pring-Mill’s work reveals a fundamental correspondence between the three major religions: medieval Christians, Jews and Muslims all sought to describe their religious beliefs using the structures of the macrocosm. Ramon Lull’s (1232–1316) philosophy makes use of this idea in order to render Christian doctrine intelligible. In his dynamic conception, man is depicted as a microcosm, thus becoming the archetype of the macrocosm and, at the same time, the image of divine trinity. Pring-Mill’s study, therefore, is not only a guide to Llull’s complete oeuvre, but also an introduction to medieval thinking in general.

For the first time, a scholarly theological library of the early modern period has been reconstructed in this work. The ‹Bibliotheca Gerhardina‹, established by Johann Gerhard and his son Johann Ernst, contains more than 6,000 bibliographical units and is one of the largest private book collections of the 17th century. The first volume of the set is an edition of the complete handwritten catalogue by J. E. Gerhards. In the second volume, there are bibliographic records for all publications concerned in accordance with modern standards along with their present location. All of the publications in the ‹Bibliotheca Gerhardina‹ have been taken into account, including those which are not listed in the catalogue. Both volumes are linked by an easily understandable numbering system. The indexes of authors/editors, printers, publishers, place of printing and location of publishing company, make this work user-friendly.

The Württembergische Landesbibliothek also has one of the largest collections in the world of Latin Bibles in print which make it possible to study the printing history of the Latin Bible text. The incunabula era is very well represented by 78 complete editions of the Bible. The complicated history of the revision of the Latin Vulgate Bible can be traced almost completely using the works in Stuttgart. The same is true of the dissemination of new Latin translations from the basic Hebrew and Greek texts. Of special significance for the history of biblical philology are the first editions of the Old Latin translation (Vetus Latina), which were printed in the late 17th and 18th centuries. In addition there are numerous annotated bilingual editions with French, German and Italian translations from the 17th to the 19th century. The descriptions in the catalogue include the stages of revision and contextual dependencies, identify the literary and artistic contributors and list the individual characteristics of each book. The volumes contain several indexes.
