The comprehensive correspondence in 1786, a year which was very eventful for Jacobi, reflects, apart from private worries, the philosophical disputes. They began with the dispute between Jacobi and the philosophers of the Enlightenment in Berlin and concerned his »Spinoza Letters« and Mendelssohn’s ›An die Freunde Lessings‹, (To the Friends of Lessing), in which he intervened with his advocacy entitled ›Wider Mendelssohn’s Beschuldigungen‹ (Against Mendelssohn’s Accusations). This was followed by the dispute about the allegation of »Jesuitism« and »crypto Catholicism«, made by the Enlightenment philosophers in Berlin, among others, against Jacobi. The correspondence also shows the close contact with Hamann concerning his ›Fliegenden Brief‹ (Flying Letter) as well as the circumstances of Jacobi’s stay in England and the groundwork for his ›David Hume über den Glauben‹ (David Hume on Faith).

With the exception of the lectures on the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ from the summer of 1804 (contained in Vol. II/8), the volume contains all of the additional versions of the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ composed prior to Fichte's departure for Erlangen. The ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ of the winter of 1804, which Fichte delivered before an audience consisting of Berlin's leading personalities from the government, the sciences, and the arts, marks his resumption of his activities as a teacher, which had been interrupted since 1802. In these lectures he exhaustively presented, in the form of a philosophia prima, the relationship of appearance to the absolute as a successive process free of all empirical-factual presuppositions. In this manner the objections of Fries were deprived of their force, and the transcendental standpoint was vindicated against Schelling. In the third ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ of 1804 and in the attached ›Prinzipien der Gottes-, Sitten- und Rechtslehre‹ Fichte completed his account of the self-development of appearances in connection with his philosophia prima. This volume also includes a few shorter writings on theology and pedagogy and concerning the concept of the Wissenschaftslehre.

The commentary on the third volume of texts shows even more clearly than the letters themselves that Jacobi was attentively following political events which were under the influence of absolutism and criticized the absolute power of the rulers in writings which were published anonymously. In the spring of 1783 he was occupied with Spinoza’s almost forgotten, succinct destruction of traditional metaphysical concepts. In this volume, the correspondence, which caused a sensation at that time, is presented again in its chronological and biographical context, in many cases rendering it comprehensible for the first time. In addition to Wilhelm Heinse‘s brilliant descriptions, the correspondence with Johann Georg Hamann is the core of this edition. The letters of the third volume are carefully annotated, as are the other letters, and indexes of places, subjects and persons make the volume of texts as well as the volume of annotations accessible.

After the new edition of his Spinoza book clarifying his own standpoint no longer had priority, Jacobi changed his strategy. Contrary to the advice of Johann Georg Hamanns, he intervened in the polemic disputes, taking the side of the crypto Jesuits, Johann Kaspar Lavater and Johann August Starck. It was here that he tried to show that the claim to enlightenment made by »Berlinism« and »Illuminatism« had to come to nothing as long as it was based on a reason which claimed absolute authority without having grounds for doing so. The correspondence which began with Hamann’s flight from Jacobi’s house at the beginning of November 1787 and ended with his death in June of 1788 provides a multitude of references to the status of the debate.

The letters written between January and November of 1787 provide insight into a stage of Jacobi’s life and creativity which was characterized by changes after the death of the »Waffenträger« (armor bearer) Thomas Wizenmann . These concerned the situation at home and in the family as well as the political and social surroundings, primarily however Jacobi’s work as a journalist. In spite of his initially uninterrupted productivity, – his book on David Hume and the translation of ›Alexis‹ by Frans Hemsterhuis were published – he began to have doubts. The generally negative reception of his book on Spinoza, the second edition of Kant’s ›Critique of Pure Reason‹ and Herder‘s restitution of Spinoza put pressure on him to clarify his own position, which Jacobi tried to establish in discussions with friends and companions, first and foremost Johann Georg Hamann.

This volume analyzes Jacobi’s efforts on behalf of the economic and financial reform, in particular of the regions in Bavaria, but also his failure due to the reactionary forces at the court of Palatinate-Bavaria. It also deals with the Vienna state chancellery‘s involvement in overthrowing the Münster reformer Franz von Fürstenberg as well as the liberal ministry of Christoph von Hohenfeld and Georg von La Roches in Kurtrier. It focuses on the reports written by Wilhelm Heinse during his trip to Italy, which are informative from the perspective of the history of music and art, as well as the commentary on the correspondence with Lessing and Lavater. Further focal points are the notes written by the second son,Georg Arnold, on his parental home and his education which he received from Matthias Claudius in Wandsbek and Amalia von Gallitzin in Münster.

The volumes in this series provide commentaries on each volume of text with the same number. They document how the letters have been transmitted, provide evidence of different versions and quotes and give annotations on persons and events. They contain a list, arranged according to the name of the author, of the literature mentioned directly or indirectly in the correspondence as well as an index of places and subjects. Volume 1 includes a genealogy of the Clermont and Jacobi families. The biographical research, some of which is presented here for the first time and summarized, give the knowledge of Jacobi a new basis. A text which was previously thought to be anonymous is assigned to Jacobi for the first time. Also new is the evidence that Jacobi was a member of the Düsseldorf loge La Parfaite Amitié.

The correspondence of 1785 was influenced mainly by Jacobi’s publication of the »Spinozabriefe« (Spinoza Letters). During this year he corresponded primarily with Johann Georg Hamann, as well as the young theologian Thomas Wizenmann, Princess Gallitzin, Goethe, Herder, Gleim, Forster, Lavater, Kleuker and Soemmerring. More than one quarter of the letters of 1875 had not been published up to now; this includes just under 90 letters. The volume contains an appendix which includes 138 previously unknown letters written between 1764 and 1784 (either handed down or made available), among which is the previously unpublished correspondence with F. K. v. Hompesch (temporarily responsible for finances as a minister of Karl Theodor’s), which document Jacobi’s political activities in Munich, among other things. The volume concludes with a detailed index of persons.

Im Mittelpunkt der II. Internationalen Fichte-Tagung stand die Frage nach der Weise, wie die Transzendentalphilosophie sich zum System formierte und gegenüber dem Empirismus, Realismus, Logizismus, Skeptizismus und absoluten Idealismus abgrenzte. Kurz gefasst lautete das Thema: »Die Wende vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert. Entscheidungsjahre der deutschen klassischen Philosophie«.
Der vorliegende Band enthält nun sämtliche Vorträge der Tagung, die vom 3. bis 8. August 1987 in Deutschlandsberg, Österreich, stattfand. Neben den gehaltenen Vorträgen sind zudem zwei Referate abgedruckt, die nicht vorgetragen werden konnten. Dem Tagungsverlauf entsprechend sind die Beiträge möglichst nach der historischen Folge der behandelten Gegenstände angeordnet.
Zwar konnten zwangsläufig nicht alle Seiten der sehr komplexen Entwicklung von 1794 bis 1814 erörtert werden, Teilausführungen in den Beiträgen und Literaturangaben verweisen den Leser jedoch weiter.
Insgesamt dokumentiert der Band damit die Relevanz der Forschung zu Fichte weltweit und vor allem in Asien sowie das Niveau, auf dem das transzendentale System von Forschern und Philosophen in den verschiedensten Ländern der Welt erörtert wird.
