The index volume attempts to show the significance of these little known lecture notes. Here as well, a lemmatized main index provides the entire language used in the lectures, a concordance facilitates the determination of places in the notes related to a certain subject, especially for those terms which are used often. About 20 pages of annotations establish the references to the ‹Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹, (Critique of Pure Reason), the reflections in the literary remains as well as the other transcripts and supplement the bibliographies of the Academy edition. In addition, the volume also corrects errors in this edition which alter the meaning in numerous places.

Meiers big ›Vernunftlehre‹ (Doctrine of Reason) is not a random source used by Kant in addition to numerous others. In fact it appears that Kant used Meier‹s big work as a compendium for his lectures to begin with and then switched over to Meier's ›Auszug aus der Vernunftlehre‹ (Excerpts from the Doctrine of Reason) after a few semesters. When he switched, he wrote down numerous excerpts from the big ›Doctrine of Reason‹ in his personal interleaved copy of this compendium, as Erich Adickes demonstrated. In her study of ›Kants Logikvorlesungen als neuen Schlüssel zur Architektonik der Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ (FMDA I,9) (Kant's Lectures on Logic as a New Key to the Architectonics of the Critique of Pure Reason), Elfriede Conrad listed these meticulously. Thus this volume is an important supplement to the index volumes previously published concerning his works on logic. It shows precisely how Meier's big ›Doctrine of Reason‹ left a lasting mark on Kant's thinking.

The ›Allgemeine Naturgeschichte und Theorie des Himmels‹ (Universal Natural History and Theory of Heaven) belongs somewhere between natural science and natural philosophy. Based on the findings of Newtonian physics, this work attempts to provide a mechanistic explanation of the universe which, according to Kant, is nevertheless compatible with the standards of religion. Studies are still disputing whether or not this was really Kant's goal and the extent to which he reached it. The controversy surrounding this work, which gave an explanation of the origins of the planetary system which was basically correct and which later on became famous under the name »Kant-Laplace'sche Theorie« (Kant-Laplace theory), does not always seem to be based on an adequate understanding of the text. This index, along with a concordance, provides a tool for an appropriate interpretation of the work, in addition to its significance for an analysis of Kant's linguistic development.

It is the proximity of time and subject in relation to the second edition of the ›Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ (Critique of Pure Reason) which are of particular interest. The index helps to show clearly the neologisms and the shifts in Kant's terminology during the development of the main critical works. At the same time however the index makes all the terms and words accessible, which although they may not belong to Kant's new terminology do nevertheless have a special significance in his practical philosophy.These are words such as for example »happy«, »practical«, »should«, »need«.

Volumes 2 and 3 of the set of indexes on the ›Naturrecht Feyerabend‹ (Natural Law Feyerabend) begin with a radically revised version of the main part (the so-called ›Abhandlung‹ or Treatise) of Kant's lecture on natural law in 1784 and thus with corrections of an immense number of errors which distorted the meaning of the text published in the Academy edition. In doing so, they have created the prerequisites for a new, in-depth analysis of this important lecture. The indexes show how strongly Kant was committed to Achenwall‹s Latin compendium in his lecture on natural law. Approximately one quarter of the lemmata are in Latin. Thus they also provide something similar to a reference work for Kant's published ›Doctrine of Right‹. The two new index volumes (30,2 und 30,3) are also important for the developmental history of Kant‹s philosophy of right. Key positions which in research have often been attributed to the work ›Über den Gemeinspruch‹ (On the Old Saw) are to found clearly worded in the ›Naturrecht Feyerabend‹. The concordance provides unique help in establishing these common features.

Kant's comments in his personal interleaved copy of the ›Beobachtungen über das Gefühl des Schönen und Erhabenen‹ (Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime) are probably his most personal notes. They are part of the handwritten literary remains which were published first and in addition to numerous anthropological reflections also contain important preliminary drafts of Kant‹s critical ethics. For the first time, this volume of indexes provides accurate insight into the range of the topics dealt with in the notes. In addition, the index on the ›Observations on the Feeling of the Beatiful and Sublime‹ included in the volume makes it possible to compare the language of the two text corpora and thus to draw conclusions about Kant's language development, and thus also about the time it took to write the ›Observations‹. Thus this index volume also provides criteria for the tiresome question pertaining to determining the date of Kant‹s literary remains as a whole.

Im Anschluß an die bereits vorliegende »Synoptische Konkordanz zu Franz Kafkas Romanen« (Indices zur deutschen Literatur, Band 26--28) erschließen diese drei Bände die »Nachgelassenen Schriften und Fragmente« dieses Autors. Es handelt sich dabei um Texte, die Franz Kafka (1883-1924) nach 1900 verfaßt hat - mit Ausnahme der drei Romane sowie der Tagebücher und Briefe. Neben Erzählungen und Aphorismen finden sich in den »Nachgelassenen Schriften« Kafkas auch Reden, Vorträge, Rezensionen, Skizzen zu Einleitungen, ein Theaterstück mitsamt Regieanweisungen sowie der »Brief an den Vater«. Als Textgrundlage für die vorliegende Konkordanz dienen die beiden Bände der »Kritischen Ausgabe« der »Nachgelassenen Schriften und Fragmente« Kafkas im Verlag S. Fischer. Das gesamte Sprachgut der »Nachgelassenen Schriften und Fragmente« ist lemmatisiert, das heißt alle Flexionsformen sowie unterschiedliche Schreibungen eines Wortes sind unter einer gemeinsamen Grundform zusammengefaßt. Der Nutzer erhält beispielsweise auf einen Blick alle Stellen - zusammen mit dem unmittelbaren Satzkontext --, an denen Kafka das Wort >Vater< bzw. Formen desselben benutzt. Anhand der Konkordanz werden Zusammenhänge, implizite Querverweise, Sprachfelder oder auch Sprachveränderungen sichtbar, die beim Lesen der Texte nicht so deutlich hervortreten. Die vorliegende synoptische Konkordanz erweist sich somit als unentbehrliches Werkzeug bei der literaturwissenschaftlichen und linguistischen Analyse der Kafkaschen Texte.

The index is based on the Latin text of the historical-critical bilingual edition of the ›Metaphysica‹ (FMDA I,2). Baumgarten’s language has been dealt with in accordance with the standards provided in section III of the FMDA. Since Kant used Baumgarten’s ›Metaphysica‹ as a basis for his lectures on this subject for more than four decades, the index also provides the first philologically reliable basis for the study of the origins of Kant’s philosophical language development in this field. Baumgarten’s own Germanizations of key Latin terms, which he included in his work starting with the fourth edition in 1757, have been compiled in a separate index.
