Rudolf (around 1270-1326) was a contemporary of Meister Eckhart and worked in Strasbourg, as did Meister Eckhart. Rudolf was a lecturer and a teacher in the Studium Generale (extracurricular studies). His main work was read not only by the clergy but was also circulated at universites as well as among the nobility and the haute bourgeoisie, which was an indication of the intellectual standing already attributed to him by his contemporaries. ‹Die sieben Wege zu Gott‹ (The Seven Ways to God) also gives texts and ideas originating from a number of spiritual and theological authors from the 14th to the 17th century. The ‹Die siben strassen zu got‹ documents the fact that the history of mysticism is also a history of education which was passed on to our second millennium with Rudolf von Biberach as its intermediary.

Weigel‹s ›Gebetbuch‹ (Book of Prayers), which combines the influence of the Reformation (Martin Luther) with concepts of German medieval mysticism (Meister Eckhart, Johannes Tauler, ›Theologia deutsch‹), has been reproduced here for the first time using a handwritten manuscript transmission. Divided into three parts, it contains detailed instructions for prayer, a study of how Adam and Christ are in us and an interpretation of the Lord‹s Prayer. By including the first part in Johann Arndt‹s ›Vier Bücher vom wahren Christentum‹ (Four Books on True Christianity), Weigel produced his most effective devotional work and made a vital contribution to internalizing prayer in the history of Protestant piety.

Together, these two works still constitute the most comprehensive historical compendium of theological and church polemics with a particular focus on the disputes in the 17th century and in the first third of the 18th century. One of the works is a bibliographical guide and a broad discussion of the disputes between the Lutherans and adherents of the early church, adherents of the Reformed Church, Socinians, radical reformers, Quakers etc., thus the »external» adversaries. The second work, arranged in the same way, deals with the movements within the Lutheran church, which thus provides a key to the sources on Pietism.

Erhard Weigel’s 1673 work contains the outline of a pansophic system that subjects all categories of being to the universal standard of the mathematical method. Following the doctrine of tres operations mentis, Weigel begins by establishing a parallel between definitions and numbers. While noting the artificiality of ordering definitions in this way, Weigel insists thatestimative knowledge alone is able to grasp the essence of things. It is only the mathesis, that is, the discretionary part of every science, that completes the project of a pansophic encyclopedia. Leibniz extensively studied and excerpted this work, which served as an important foundation for his plan for a demonstrative encyclopedia.

Both Johann Arndt‹s ‹Vier Bücher vom wahren Christentum‹ (Four Books on True Christianity) (1605–1610) and Gerhard‹s ‹Meditationes Sacrae‹ had a very strong impact and even had some influence on pietism and 19th-century revivalism. Gerhard‹s devotional work provides an insight into the meditative and biblical piety of Lutheran orthodoxy, the new reception of mystical traditions([Ps-]Augustin, Anselm von Canterbury, [Ps-]Bernhard, Dionysius the Carthusian among others) and the implementation of orthodox dogmatic theology in devotional literature. The volume contains a reprint and an edition of the previously unknown original handwritten version of the ‹Meditationes‹, which varies considerably from the printed version. The apparatuses refer to biblical passages, show evidence of references to early Christian and medieval writings and provide information on Gerhard‹s revisions of the text for the first printing. An index of names, biblical passages and keywords are included in the edition.

Containing the ›Seligmachenden Erkenntnis Gottes‹ (True Knowledge of God) written in 1574, this volume provides a further work on epistemology. Due to its close connection with the writings in volumes 3 and 8, the text, which initially was counted as one of the spuria, can now be seen as Weigel‹s alternative to this important topic. One of his duties as a pastor was a funeral sermon from 1576 on 1 Thessalonians 4, the only Weigel text which was published during his lifetime, which also contains the small work ›Bericht vom Glauben‹, (Report on Faith) reprinted in the appendix.

Gerhard‘s ›Enchiridion‹ is a handbook about fighting the various temptations, in particular in the face of dying and death. Gerhard completed work on this book of consolation in the period between the death of his first child and that of his first wife. A fictitious dialogue between someone subjected to temptation and a consoler deals with 46 questions, doubts and temptations ranging from the harbingers of death to the severity of the Last Judgment. A prayer for those who are ill or in need rounds out the book of consolation, which is part of a long tradition of “ars moriendi.” The critically edited Latin text is accompanied by a German translation published in 1611. The annotations in the apparatus provide information on the biblical quotations, the works of the Church Fathers as well as medieval and contemporary theology. An afterword puts this work into its context in the history of theology and literature and indexes make the work accessible.

This is the first German translation of ‹Über die Gottesschau‹ (Of the Beatific Vision) by St. Augustine Augustinus, a translation which the editor Erich Naab presents along with the Latin text, annotates in the detailed introduction and puts into its historical context. The classification in the historical context is also the function of the ‹Erinnerungsschreiben‹ (A Letter of Instructions) to Fortunatianus, the text, translation and introduction of which are provided subsequently. The letter ‹Über die Gegenwart Gottes‹ (On the Presence of God) deals with a question which is based closely upon the study of the first text, which results in an in-depth view of the Augustine discussion. Since these texts are concealed in the extensive body of Augustine‹s letters, this volume is a reader-friendly student edition which sheds light on these issues. The ‹Fließende Licht der Gottheit‹ (The Flowing Light of Divinity), written by the mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg (1207–1282), is the oldest surviving document of women‹s mysticism in German. The first complete translation of the text (1955), which had been out of print for a long time, is being presented here in an extensive revised edition based on the text-critical Middle High German edition edited by Hans Neumann (1990/93).
