This bibliography lists Gerhard‹s independent and non-independent publications, including the various translations and new editions up to the present time. This is the first bibliography of the works of one of the most important and productive representatives of Protestant church and theological history in the Baroque Era. Approximately 2,000 bibliographic entries illustrate the wide range of his literary works: Bible commentaries, devotional works, collections of sermons and individual sermons, systematic and controversial theological works, series of disputation theses and epicedia, forewords, expert assessments of individual theological, political and ethical issues. This is a substantial segment of the bibliographical coverage of the 17th century, which has increasingly been gaining momentum. Location of the sources described is provided, thus facilitating their access. Indexes of (co-)authors, contributors, printers, publishers, place of printing and location of publishing company make the work easily accessible for all those using it.

Exercitium Pietatis Quotidianum Quadripartitum (1612)
Gerhard‹s book of prayer was published in 1612 for the first time in Latin. There were 86 editions of this work, it was translated into 13 languages and had an international and interdenominational impact. This edition provides a parallel version of the Latin text and the contemporary German translation. The text is made accessible by text-critical annotations and evidence of biblical quotations as well as references to ancient Christian and medieval sources. The appendix contains all of the spiritual songs which the Szczecin pastor Friedrich Fabricius (1642–1703) included in his new edition of the ‹Exercitium‹ from the year 1688. There is also an introduction to the origins and the impact.

All of Gerhard‹s funeral sermons which have been published as well as the sermon held for Gerhard‹s funeral by his colleague in Jena, Johann Major, are included in this volume. These texts, available in a critical edition for the first time, provide examples of the many and varied rhetorical-homiletic and theological facets of an important literary genre of the early modern period and of the Lutheran »ars moriendi.« Although there has now been considerable research done on funeral sermons in the 17th century, up to now what has been missing completely is a scholarly text edition. Thanks to this edition, this has now changed. The annotation apparatus provides explanations of terms and subjects in addition to verification of the biblical and traditional material. An afterword provides an introduction to the relevance of the text in terms of the history of sermons, theology and piety. The edition also includes indexes of persons and biblical passages.

Bibliotheca Gerhardina
For the first time, a scholarly theological library of the early modern period has been reconstructed in this work. The ‹Bibliotheca Gerhardina‹, established by Johann Gerhard and his son Johann Ernst, contains more than 6,000 bibliographical units and is one of the largest private book collections of the 17th century. The first volume of the set is an edition of the complete handwritten catalogue by J. E. Gerhards. In the second volume, there are bibliographic records for all publications concerned in accordance with modern standards along with their present location. All of the publications in the ‹Bibliotheca Gerhardina‹ have been taken into account, including those which are not listed in the catalogue. Both volumes are linked by an easily understandable numbering system. The indexes of authors/editors, printers, publishers, place of printing and location of publishing company, make this work user-friendly.

Steiger‹s studies do not only trace Gerhard‹s dogmatics but also the implementation of his theology in the areas of devotional literature, pastoral care by letter and sermons. The volume provides a critical annotated edition of the 21-year-old Gerhard‹s last will and testament, written in 1603 while he was seriously ill, and studies the reception of medieval mysticism by Gerhard and other Lutheran theologians. Steiger shows Gerhard as a writer of spiritual letters by editing and annotating texts which are examples of this. An essay on the edition of the ‹Meditationes Sacrae‹ completes the volume.
