This volume is dedicated to Tomas G. Masaryk, professor of philosophy, first President of the Czechoslovakian Republic and critical realist. The author examines Masaryk's philosophical works and their application to political reality. A critical realist approach is a precondition for intellectual and societal progress. Before Masaryk himself became actively involved in politics in the late 1880s, he studied current affairs intently and was a driving force in his nation's quest for independence. Masaryk saw in the democratic ideal of the Allied forces the opposing position to the imperialist form of rule of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Masaryk's democratic theory is embedded in a spiritual humanistic agenda. During his presidency, he encouraged the development of autonomy and self-administration of individuals, classes and nations; at the same time he endorsed the idea of a united, democratic Europe.

Michael Walzer gehört heute zu den bedeutendsten politischen Philosophen, der die entsprechenden Diskurse seit John Rawls A Theory of Justice (1971) nachhaltig geprägt hat. Dabei wird er von zahlreichen Interpreten dem im Anschluss an Rawls entstandenen Kommunitarismus zugerechnet. In diesem Band führt die Autorin anhand reichhaltigen Materials vor, dass diese Einschätzung nur teilweise angemessen ist. Das wird Dank der Quellen, auf die sich Walzer selber bezieht und die sein Denken geprägt haben, deutlich. Die Autorin stellt eine gelungene Anwendung politischer Philosophie und Theorie auf einen konkreten politischen Gegenstand dar, nämlich Walzers Theorie des Pluralismus und des Universalismus auf den Europarat, insbesondere auf das Übereinkommen über Menschenrechte und Biomedizin, die Oviedo-Konvention. Dazu zeigt sie historisch sowie systematisch, wie sich die Menschenrechtskonvention und die Oviedo-Konvention sowohl in ihren Gehalten als auch in der Weise ihrer Entstehung mit Walzers Ansätzen interpretieren lassen.
