Fürstin Pauline zur Lippe (1769–1820) ist bis auf den heutigen Tag eine legendäre Gestalt in Lippe. Sie herrschte in Lippe mit Engagement und Durchsetzungswillen und brachte Reformen auf den Weg, die ihr dauerhaften Nachruhm sicherten. In unruhigen Zeiten übernahm sie 1802 die stellvertretende Regentschaft für ihren Sohn Leopold II. und bestimmte gut 18 Jahre die Geschicke ihres kleinen Landes. Wie sah sie sich selbst? Wie verstand sie ihr Regierungshandeln? Welche Ziele bestimmten ihre Entscheidungen?
Dieser Sammelband gibt neue Antworten auf den aktuellen Stand der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion. Hervorgegangen aus einer Fachtagung anlässlich ihres 200. Todesjahres im Frühjahr 2020, konzentrieren sich die Beiträge auf Pauline als historische und exemplarische Figur und bieten damit einen unverstellten Blick auf die Praxis weiblicher Herrschaft. Vergleichende Perspektiven über die Grenzen Lippes hinaus verorten die Fürstin im Kontext der dramatischen Umbruchzeit an der Wende vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert.
