The first fully-staged productions of the LA Opera House groundbreaking Recovered Voices project, highlighting the works of composers affected by the Holocaust. A double bill of one-act operas: Viktor Ullmann’s Der zerbrochene Krug, taken from a comedy by the Romantic German poet Heinrich von Kleist, and Alexander Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg, based on Oscar Wilde’s powerful tragedy The Birthday of the Infanta. The music of Alexander Zemlinsky and Viktor Ullmann remained buried for decades in the wake of the destruction wrought by the policies of the Nazi regime. Dozens of composers and thousands of compositions are still largely unknown to musicians and lovers of classical music and opera. “Full recognition of their works and genius still awaits Alexander Zemlinsky and Viktor Ullmann, more than sixty-five years after their deaths. Their works, in their very different ways, are powerful, vibrant, life-affi rming and tragic in turn. They pulsate with the complexity of the human condition. Ullmanns Kritiken gehören zu den wichtigsten Dokumenten der „Freizeitgestaltung“ in Theresienstadt. Bis zu seiner Deportation nach Auschwitz (1944) hat der Komponist kontinuierlich über das Musikleben des Lagers berichtet. Die Texte von Viktor Ullmann werden hier vollständig veröffentlicht, erschlossen durch Kommentare und Interviews mit Zeitzeugen und Überlebenden, ein Verzeichnis der aufgeführten Kompositionen, ein Lexikon der von Ullmann erwähnten Theresienstädter Musiker und ein Namensregister.
Gegenüber der Erstauflage von 1993 hat der Herausgeber und Ullmann-Experte Ingo Schultz, der im Jahr zuvor die Manuskripte der Kritiken im Amsterdamer Reichskriegsmuseum (Rijksinstituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie) fand, die einleitenden und kommentierenden Ausführungen für die jetzt vorliegende Neuauflage revidiert und ergänzt. Er berücksichtigt die Ergebnisse aus fast zwei Jahrzehnten Ullmann-Forschung, die seit Anfang der neunziger Jahre einsetzte und für die auch die Erstauflage der Ullmann-Kritiken ein wichtiger Impulsgeber war.
Allein die Ullmann-Texte stehen für sich: Es mag noch immer gelten, was im Bayerischen Rundfunk, Hörfunk, in einer Besprechung zur Erstauflage wie folgt formuliert wurde: „Wer sich mit diesem dunklen Kapitel der Musikgeschichte befassen möchte, dem sei dieser Band 3 aus der Reihe ‚Verdrängte Musik’ nachhaltig empfohlen.“
