Spies, espionage and secret diplomacy are one of the key topics in the Early Modern Period. This volume examines different matters of espionage (economic espionage, political espionage etc.) and investigates the way of >professionalization< of spies. It finds answers to the questions: What is a spy in the Early Modern Period and how did he work? And what depends on a successful espionage? The volume presents 13 contributions and allows therefore for new insights to different famous spies. Besides, it analyses historical examples in different countries, so that the networks, the visibility and invisibility of spies and also their instruments become clear.
