In contrast to most of her famous contemporaries, Droste-Hülshoff shunned publicity, with the result that most of her oeuvre remained unpublished during her lifetime. For this portion of her work, an editor has to construct the texts from posthumous manuscripts. The resultant editorial problems were not satisfactorily resolved in the recognised critical edition of Droste-Hülshoff's works dating back to 1925–1930, which is outdated in every respect and in addition has long been out of print.Finally, Droste-Hülshoff has a second idiosyncrasy which makes the provision of an historical-critical edition particularly urgent. Droste-Hülshoff often did not really finish her texts in manuscript, but left various possibilities open, without really deciding on one rather than the other. The consequences of this basic indecisiveness, particularly for posthumous texts, for which the editor had to decide on one particular version for the text edition, can only be fully realised within a historical-critical edition which in its critical apparatus fully documents the genesis of the texts using extant manuscripts and prints. It is here in particular that the new material is brought to bear which the editor, the Germanist Winfried Woesler, and his research team processed in the course of years of preparatory work.This historical-critical edition, of the works and correspondence of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff (1797–1848), prepared according to modern editorial principles, was finally completed at the end of 2000 after 22 years of work. The edition comprises a total of 28 volumes (14 volumes with part-volumes).

Pressefreiheit. Studie zur Geschichte von Wort und Begriff
Pressefreiheit ist ein starkes Grundrecht und einer der wichtigsten und markantesten Bestandteile der Menschenrechte. Sie erscheint in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung als ihr Zentrum, als eigengewichtige und prominente Spezifikation von Meinungsfreiheit. International gelten ihre Anerkennung und Durchsetzung als wesentliche Belege für das Funktionieren einer demokratischen Gesellschaft.
Trotz dieser politischen und rechtlichen Bedeutung und obwohl das Wort täglich in den Medien verwendet wird und so zum sprachlichen Alltag gehört, gibt es – erstaunlicherweise ‒ keine Wort- und Begriffsgeschichte von ‚Pressefreiheit‘. Lothar Jordan erweitert in seiner philologischen Studie die Kenntnisse der Entstehung und Etablierung von Wort und Begriff der ‚Pressefreiheit‘ und der ihr vorausgehenden Termini ‚Freiheit der Presse‘ und ‚Preßfreiheit‘ grundlegend.
Die Geschichte von Wort und Begriff ‚Pressefreiheit‘ ist, anders als Darstellungen in allen Fächern nahelegen, nicht durch Kontinuität seit dem 18. Jahrhundert geprägt. Es handelt sich um zwei Geschichten, die vor allem durch das das Wort ‚Presse‘ und die Veränderung seiner Bedeutung komplex verbunden sind. ‚Freiheit der Presse‘ und ‚Preßfreiheit‘ entstanden im Kontext der westeuropäischen Aufklärung, im englisch-deutschen Kulturtransfer des 18. Jahrhunderts, ‚Pressefreiheit‘ hingegen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts, als die Zeitungen eine sehr weite Verbreitung und der Journalismus eine große gesellschaftliche Bedeutung gewonnen hatten. Die Studie verfolgt die schrittweise Durchsetzung von ‚Pressefreiheit‘ bis zu ihrer Implementierung ins deutsche Grundgesetz 1949.
Veröffentlicht wird dieses Buch im Jahr zum 30jährigen Jubiläum des Internationalen Tages der Pressefreiheit, der von der UNESCO immer am 3. Mai ausgerichtet wird.

Der 17. Band der Beiträge zur Kleist-Forschung dokument zwei Konferenzen, die das Kleist-Museum ausrichtete: zum einen das internationale Kolloquium zur Penthesilea (27. und 28. Im Jahr 2001 erwarb das Kleist-Museum ein neu aufgefundenes Autograph Heinrich von Kleists; es handelt sich um ein bis dahin unbekanntes Gedicht, das starke Bezüge zu Goethes Gedicht "Ein gleiches" aufweist, und als Faksimile präsentiert wird.
